Firestopping, an often misunderstood construction practice

Writer: Kenia MosqueraKenia Mosquera

Firestopping is the use of fire-resistant seals to maintain the integrity of passive fire protection systems and block fire and smoke from spreading. All firestop systems for fire-rated construction need to be reproduced on the plans as tested by an approved testing laboratory. Therefore, the installer must be experienced to deliver safe and secure projects.

Is fireproofing the same as firestopping?

While firestopping helps prevent the spread of fire and harmful gases throughout your building, fireproofing protects the structural portions of your building to prevent collapse and irreparable damage during a fire.

There are several misconceptions surrounding firestopping such as Firestopping caulks and sealants must be red in color, polyurethane foam is an adequate firestop, all pipe insulations are firestopped the same way, etc.
